Stream Rehabilitation In Ontario
Throughout Ontario there are streams that once provided critical spawning habitat for trout. Over time these streams have been subjected to a number of changes - most of them brought on by human activity. Today, everything from poor farming practices to road improvement and the growth of housing have all contributed to a decline in fish and wildlife habitat adjacent to these streams.
With the help of our supporters, we have been able to bring back some of that habitat through our work with Community Stream Stewardship groups. For some streams it is as simple as fencing off the cattle from access to the stream. In other situations reforestation, stream stabilization or the removal of water-warming ponds is required.
Because these groups work with local landowners and other community interests, the value of our contribution is compounded so that for every dollar we provide, $2 to $5 of real work is actually accomplished on the ground.
The sad truth is that there are far more streams and river valleys in need of rehabilitation than there are funds. Your support helps us reduce that growing list. To make a contribution, please visit our donation page.
