Wildlife Research
The loon represents all that is wild in Ontario and in Canada. The population of loons was fairly stable in this province but it only took one migration season to change that population trend. During the fall migration of birds, local residents in a Lake Erie community discovered hundreds of dead loons washed up on the beach. The birds were found to have died from botulism.
The Ontario Wildlife Foundation was already funding waterfowl species research when this die-off occurred. Your contributions helped find the cause of this devastating event. The botulism source turned out to be an invading species of fish known as the Round Gobi - yet another reason to continue to press governments and residents to help fight the invasive species entering our lakes and rivers. You can help us find answers to important fish and wildlife problems that still await funding. Please visit our donation page to make your contribution today.
