Invasive Species Awareness
In our forests, our streams and in our lakes, the invasion of species from other continents continues. In some cases, they arrive in the ballast water of tanker ships while in other cases they are introduced into gardens or local ponds for ornamental reasons. Stopping the invasion will take many years of concerted effort and key to the success of those efforts will be making the general public aware of the threat to our fish and wildlife.
The Ontario Wildlife Foundation supports the education of Ontario residents to the dangers of these invaders and the promotion of measures to reduce or eliminate the impact of invading fish, invertebrates and vegetation. The simple act of cleaning your boat before you take it to another lake could help stop the spread of zebra muscles and the spiny water flea. Cleaning your hiking boots could stop the spread of dog strangling vine and other invasive seeds attached to your shoes.
