Bus Tour and Afforestation Action

Granted $17,000.00 to assist in the ALUS Peterborough Bus Tour and Afforestation Action

Project Objectives:

In southern Ontario the loss of natural infrastructure and fragmentation of habitat has occurred since settlement. Additionally, the accumulation of non-point source pollutants from agriculture negatively impacts the watershed. When present, forests, wetlands, and waterways provide key ecological services to withstand human-related pressures, while providing habitat for wildlife, including several species at risk in Ontario.

Since 2017, the program has restored 458 acres of marginal farmland which are now providing a range of ecological services, including freshwater ecological services such as fish and wildlife habitat, water filtration, floodwater retention, and carbon storage, to name a few. A major highlight in 2022 was the creation of ALUS Peterborough’s first two open-water wetlands.
