See The Salmon Run – Annual Community Event
The annual See The Salmon Run event takes place each early fall, coinciding with the salmon spawning season. This cherished community gathering brings people together to promote the conservation of salmon habitats within our local watersheds. The event focuses on educating children, raising awareness of habitat challenges, and fostering a love for the outdoors.
Event Pillars: Self-Guided Nature Hike
The heart of the event is a 20-minute self-guided nature hike along Silver Creek. Along the way, families can witness salmon navigating upstream while learning about fish spawning and riparian habitats. Conservation experts from local organizations, including Georgian Bay Forever and regional conservation authorities, provide educational insights and interactive learning experiences. Children can collect stamps in their fish passports at designated knowledge stops, making for an engaging and educational adventure.
Salmon Tours
2024, we expanded the event to include additional salmon viewing opportunities. Participants could bike or drive to seven designated observation points across three streams. The 25km bike tour offers a unique way for groups to enjoy the outdoors while observing salmon migration throughout the watershed.
Kids’ Activities
We collaborate with local organizations, such as Elephant Thoughts and the Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority, to provide edutainment—a blend of education and entertainment for families. Highlights include a giant inflatable salmon replica where children can learn about the anatomy and lifecycle of salmon, as well as interactive games and crafts hosted by our local library.
2025 Event Expansion & Funding Needs
For 2025, we are relocating the event to Nottawa to enhance salmon viewing opportunities. While this move will enrich the experience for attendees, it also increases our operational costs, particularly for facilities. To continue delivering a high-quality, accessible event, we seek additional funding to support these necessary expansions.
Now in its eighth year, See The Salmon Run has grown into a well-known, family-friendly gathering that fosters community engagement and environmental stewardship. Through strong partnerships with local authorities, we actively promote the conservation of salmon habitats and watersheds, ensuring the protection of these critical ecosystems for future generations. This event provides numerous benefits, including: Environmental Stewardship: Collaborating with local conservation authorities to promote watershed research and sustainable practices. Outdoor Engagement: Encouraging families to enjoy and appreciate our natural surroundings while fostering a deeper connection to the environment. Youth Education: Engaging children in hands-on learning experiences that enhance their understanding of local ecosystems and conservation efforts. By bringing together community members, conservation experts, and local authorities, we create an inclusive and educational experience that strengthens environmental awareness and action. Continued support will allow us to expand our outreach and further our mission of protecting and preserving our natural resources.
